In 1908, the Young Turks revolted against Sultan Hamid and restored the Constitution. After the Ottoman Empire’s defeat in the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913, the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP), an ultra nationalist group of Young Turks, took control of the government. Its goal was to achieve the Turkification of the Empire and to eliminate ethnic Christian minorities such as the Armenians, Assyrians, Anatolian and Pontian Greeks.
